Getting Started

Where is CryptoCoins?

CryptoCoins lives in your macOS menu bar — the row of icons in the top-right of your screen, next to your clock and Wi-Fi. Click the CryptoCoins icon to open the price popover. The app does not appear in the Dock or the Cmd-Tab app switcher.

Your first coins

Bitcoin and Ethereum are pre-loaded as favorites. To add more, tap the search icon (magnifying glass), find a coin, and tap the star to add it. You can also browse the top 30 coins by market cap.

Menu bar display

By default, the menu bar shows just the CryptoCoins icon. In Settings you can change this to show a live price for any favorited coin, or your total portfolio value. Go to Settings (gear icon) → Menu Bar Display.

How to quit

Since CryptoCoins has no Dock icon, you won't find it in the standard Cmd+Q menu. To quit, open the popover → go to Settings (gear icon) → scroll to the bottom → tap "Quit CryptoCoins."

Troubleshooting

Prices show "stale" or won't load

Check your internet connection. CryptoCoins uses two data sources (CoinGecko and CoinCap) with automatic failover. If both are temporarily unavailable, cached prices are shown with a stale indicator. Data recovers automatically — usually within a few minutes.

Price alert notifications not appearing

Make sure notifications are enabled: System Settings → Notifications → CryptoCoins → toggle "Allow Notifications" on. Also check that the alert is active (not snoozed) in the app's alerts list.

Desktop widget not updating

The widget syncs prices when you open the menu bar popover. Open CryptoCoins once and the widget will refresh. The widget requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. To add it: right-click your desktop → Edit Widgets → search "CryptoCoins."

I can't find the app — it's not in my Dock

CryptoCoins is a menu bar app. Look for its icon in the top-right of your screen (the menu bar), not the Dock at the bottom. It also won't appear when you press Cmd+Tab.

Favorites or settings disappeared

Your data is stored locally at ~/Library/Application Support/CryptoCoins/. If you recently reinstalled, this folder may have been removed. Unfortunately there's no way to recover deleted local data.

Prices update too slowly

You can change the refresh interval in Settings: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 15 minutes. Shorter intervals give fresher prices but use more API calls. If you see rate limiting (prices temporarily stop updating), try a longer interval.

Features Guide

Portfolio & Holdings

Track the value of your crypto holdings. On any coin's detail page, tap "Set Holdings" and enter the quantity you own. The favorites screen shows your total portfolio value and 24h change at the top, with a color-coded allocation bar. You can also display your portfolio total in the menu bar via Settings → Menu Bar Display.

Price Alerts

On any coin's detail page, tap "Add Alert" and set a target price (above or below current). When the price crosses your target, you get a native macOS notification — even when the popover is closed. Alerts check every 60 seconds in the background. You can snooze an alert for 30 minutes. Limits: 20 alerts total, 5 per coin.

Charts

Tap any coin to see a sparkline chart with five timeframes: 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, and 1 year. Below the chart you'll find a stats grid with 24h high, low, volume, and market cap.

Desktop Widget

Pin your favorite coins to your desktop or Notification Center. The widget shows live prices and 24h change. To add: right-click your desktop → Edit Widgets → search "CryptoCoins." Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Prices sync when you open the menu bar popover.

Favorites

Add coins by searching and tapping the star icon. To remove a coin, long-press (hold for half a second) on a coin row to enter edit mode, then tap the X. To reorder, drag and drop coins in the list. You can also use the sort button to auto-sort by Price, 24h Change, Name, or Market Cap. Select "Manual" to re-enable drag reorder.

Search

Search across 18,000+ coins by name or symbol. Results appear as you type using a local prefix-indexed cache — it works even offline. You can also browse the top 30 coins by market cap.

Display Currency

All prices can be shown in USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, or BTC. Change your currency in Settings (gear icon).

Keyboard Shortcuts

/ or ⌘ F — Search
⌘ R — Refresh prices
⌘ , — Settings
↑ ↓ + Enter — Navigate favorites
Shift ↑ ↓ — Reorder favorites
Esc — Go back

Refresh Interval

Choose how often prices update: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 15 minutes. Shorter intervals mean fresher data but more API usage. The default is 1 minute.

Privacy & Data

CryptoCoins collects no personal data. No account, no sign-up, no tracking, no analytics.

All your data — favorites, holdings, settings, and alerts — is stored locally on your Mac at ~/Library/Application Support/CryptoCoins/. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

The only network requests are to CoinGecko and CoinCap public APIs to fetch price data. These requests contain only public coin identifiers (e.g., "bitcoin", "ethereum") — no user data, device IDs, or personal information.

Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
